Potentiometric Evaluation of Stability Constants of Transition Metal–Valinic Acid Binary Complexes

Abstract:
In the present work stability constants of binary complexes formed between transition metal ions and valinic acid have been evaluated by potentiometric method in aqueous medium. The complexation behavior of biologically important transition metals like Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Cd (II) and Fe(II) with vanillic acid was studied at constant ionic strength and temperature by ELICO (Model L-120) pH meter for titration technique. To understand the coordination tendencies of the ligand towards different metal ions, the stability constants of proton–ligand and metal–ligand were determined by means of potentiometric titration data. The results showed the formation of stable 1:1 metal–ligand complexes with the highest stability of Cd(II) among the studied metal ions. The observed stability order was rationalized in terms of ionic radius, electronic configuration and ligand field effects. The study offers valuable insight into the coordination chemistry and solution equilibria of transition metal complexes with Vanillic acid.
