Beta Thalassemia Prevalence in Industrial Areas of West Bengal: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: Beta thalassemia is one of the most common hereditary hemoglobinopathies. It continues to be a major public health concern in India. Industrial populations, especially in West Bengal, are special populations with unique demographic characteristics. These populations are prone to various diseases, which are influenced by various risk factors. This review aims to discuss the prevalence trends of beta thalassemia among industrial populations in West Bengal, identify the major risk factors that influence this condition, and discuss the existing methods for screening this condition. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using various literature sources, epidemiological studies, research articles, and various publications on this topic. A literature search was done on various databases, existing literature on global prevalence, national trends among Indians, regional trends among West Bengal populations, and existing literature on this topic. According to various literature sources, the total carrier frequency among Indians is approximately 3-4%. The prevalence among industrial populations in West Bengal is moderate to high. This is because these populations are mixed populations due to migration. Moreover, they are prone to various diseases due to consanguineous marriages, lack of awareness, and lack of screening programs. In conclusion, this condition continues to be a major public health concern.
