Security of Satellite Communications

Abstract:
Satellite communications systems have now become part of the current global infrastructure and have been essential in providing fundamental services like navigation, military operations and broadband connections. The growing reliance on these systems has however revealed them to numerous advanced security threats such as jamming, spoofing, eavesdropping and cyberattacks affecting space and ground segments. The use of legacy architectures, ineffective encryption algorithms, and increased integration with new technologies (5G and Internet of Things (IoT)) further contributes to these challenges .The paper explores the changing nature of threats in satellite communications as well as critically examines current security mechanisms. It points to the shortcomings of traditional methods that are based on the use of separate protection methods and the necessity to use comprehensive methods. To solve such problems, the paper examines fourth generation security measures, such as adaptive encryption, anomaly detection with artificial intelligence, trust management with blockchain, and physical layer security. Moreover, the study will introduce a multi-layered security model that will help to increase the system resilience by providing a multi-layered protection, real-time threat detection, and safeguarding data transmission. The results show that a combination of several security technologies is much more effective in enhancing the overall resilience of satellite communication systems than single-layered solutions. The research concludes that any future satellite networks should embrace smart, dynamic and adaptable security architectures in order to overcome more complicated and dynamic threats
