Abstract:
Human anthropogenic activities have caused an increase in heavy metal pollution in the water bodies. The highconcentration of heavy metals also affects consumers through the food chain. Water samples from Gangasandra tank of Tumkur district were collected between May 2022 and April 2023 and were analyzed for eight heavy metals. The water sediments were characterized by a sandy to very fine texture. In the Gangasandra tank, the heavy metals were found to be present in widespread concentrations: Fe (0.10-0.28 mg/l), Cu (0.001-0.075 mg/l), Cd( 0.001-0.005 mg/L), and Pb (0.008–0.015 mg/L). However, Mn, Cr,and Hexavalent Chromium were below measurable levels in this tank. The results signify that levels of Cd slightly exceeded the order of magnitude as per the values stated by Environment Protection Agency (2002); WHO (World Health Organization, 1993), and USPH (United States Public Health). The order of heavy metal levelsin water was Fe>Cu>Pb>Cd.This water body was mesotrophic concerning Pb, Cu, and Cd.. The data is vital for pollution management of the tank, as information about metal loadings into the water system is lacking. The results are compared with the BIS and WHO standards to categorize the tank thatis not as per the standards.
