Comparative study on performance of islamic and conventional banks in MENA region

Abstract: This study aims to measure the performance, profitability and efficiency of Islamic and conventional banks in the MENA region and its determinants. We use for this purpose the ROAA, ROAE to understand the overall profitability and econometric modeling for measuring profitability. The results show similar trends for both types of performance measurement. The banks category analysis reveals that conventional banks are outperforming Islamic banks. Despite technological changes experienced by the banking system in the MENA region, and the effectiveness of the banks in the MENA region is sensitive to the variables such as crisis, deposits, capitalization and including variables related to business lines
