Economia primário-exportadora e padrões de construção do Estado na Argentina e no Brasil
Wilma Peres da Costa
Revista Economia e Sociedade, 2000, vol. 14, 28
Abstract:
The article is an effort of comparative analysis, focusing the paths followed by Brazil and Argentine Republic between 1870 and 1914. It tries to understand in which way the State building process established different basis for the political economy in these two countries, which otherwise shared many common characteristics. It approaches the constitution of taxation systems and the way the relationship political center/provinces was established, to point out the strong divergence presented from 1870 onwards: Argentine became increasingly centralized, while Brazil went through the crisis of the monarchic centralized regime and established, with the Republic, a fiscal federative system. The work also tries to relate these divergent paths to the contrasting role of the State in each economy before World War I.
