Abstract:
The author describes major changes to the role played by BNDES ? National Bank for Economic and Social Development ? as a fostering financial institution as well as its chief financing lines. This article also describes a few joint initiatives from the public and private sectors for long-term financing in the Brazilian economy during the 90?s. The relevance of implementing active financial policies by the public sector is advocated based on the absence of diversification mechanisms and long-term credit operations.
