Abstract: This paper discuss the trends over Social Mobility levels and patterns in Brazil, based upon 1982 and 1996 National Household Surveys, using a five-scaled occupational classification. It shows that career mobility figures have been changing over the years, revealing higher levels of downward mobility and non mobility, due to the growing adversity of Brazilian labor market evolution. It also presents the mobility levels of some demographic groups (classified by sex, race, generation) and some social economic groups (classified by educational level, occupational group), and their growing differentials on upward mobility. The paper also aims to discuss the importance of regional economic growth and occupational profile as structural factors of social mobility in some in/out migration areas in Brazil.
