Abstract: This paper deals about the changes in the level and the structure of employment and the purchasing power of income work in the São Paulo metropolitan area between 1992 and 1999 using individual data from a national survey (PNAD). Activity sectors and position in occupation were considered and the occupied population with positive incomes was classified in four categories with the two extremes formed by the 20% more poor and the 10% more rich.
