A transição capitalista no Rio Grande do Sul, 1889-1930: uma nova interpretação

Abstract: The article characterises the capitalist development of Rio Grande do Sul region during the First Brazilian Republic (1889-1930). It sustains the hypothesis that the gaúcha society experimented a peculiar process of transition to capitalist relations of production, with divergent characteristics from the same process in Brazilian regions whose economic development had settled on the plantations (slavery and rural large propriety). The article points out the specific socio-historical origins of this capitalist transition in Rio Grande do Sul as well as the characteristics referring to the regional macroeconomic dynamics, to the role and nature of the regional State?s intervention in economy, and to the origins and characteristics of the regional industry and its market labour.
