Abstract: During the last two decades human diet has became affected for a group of concerns related to the health, obesity and environment as well as for social variables as longevity increase, woman´s larger participation in the job market and larger number of people that live alone. Those factors affect food demand with reflexes on the international trade. This paper analyzes the implications of these tendencies on trade from 1980 to 1998. The model confronts Brazilian agricultural exports tendencies to international demand and it allowed to conclude that most of the Brazilian exports value refers to products whose world demand declines. Products whose world demand has had increased maintained small expression in the Brazilian exports, resulting in loss of competitiveness.
