Desigualdade, escolaridade e rendimentos na agricultura, indústria e serviços, de 1992 a 2002

Rodolfo Hoffman

Revista Economia e Sociedade, 2004, vol. 23, 29

Abstract: The paper analyses the inequality of income distribution among persons occupied in Brazilian agriculture, comparing it with the income distribution among persons occupied in industry and in services, during the period 1992-2002. The evolution of the level of schooling of persons occupied in the three sectors is also compared. One outstanding characteristic of income distribution in agriculture is the high percentage of the sectoral income appropriated by the richest 10%, 5% or 1%. The socio-economic level of persons occupied in agriculture, measured by average income and years of schooling, is much lower than in the other sectors, and this difference shows no decreasing trend. The paper analyses carefully the increase in the inequality of income distribution in agriculture from 1999 to 2002, when the average income increased only for those in the higher strata of the income and land tenure distribution, and it shows the relationship between this phenomenon and the increasing returns from agricultural exports.
