Abstract: Salute, sostenibilit? e indicatori per il monitoraggio della strategia europea per lo sviluppo sostenibile - Making the concept of sustainable development (sd) operational for public policies raises various challenges, mainly linked to definition aspects, methodological and measurement problems. The multi-domain framework, chosen at eu level, gives high priority to health in the eu strategy on sd and raises the need of indicators in order to monitor its achieved progresses. A short description of the political basis of sd in eu, an insight into possible definitions of sustainability with reference to health and into health indicators monitoring the strategy are given in this paper. An analysis of Disability Free Life Expectancy is then carried out, with reference to its methodological definition and ethical basis, as well as informative contents and possible interpretation of indicator changes.
