Abstract:
This special issue includes five contributions dedicated to the economy of the South. The works analyze various aspects of the southern economy related to the economic crisis that has characterized the last decade. The treated aspects range from the consolidation of public finances to the redistributive consequences of the increase in public spending for interests on sovereign debt. The results highlight the pro-cyclical characteristics of transfers to the southern regions, reflecting the sacrifice made by the South for the revival of the national economy. Sacrifice is also witnessed by the effects of the economic policies of the last few years that, implemented at national level, have produced different results on a regional scale, strengthening the North-South divide in the country. Moreover, the growth of the southern economy cannot ignore the infrastructural enhancement of transports. The latter are essential to make the Mezzogiorno the leading economy for the growth of the Mediterranean basin.
