A technological index for the Italian regions

Abstract: In this work we measure the technological position of the Italian regions with the adoption of the Technology Achievement Index developed by Desai, Fukuda, Johansson and Sagasti (2002). First we note that other available indexes are obtained as a by-product of theoretical- based methods, so that they are subject to the assumptions of their respective models. If using a statistical index permits to avoid this problem, adopting a composite index (unlike many single indexes) has also the advantage to summarize the evidence and to obtain a unique rank of the Italian regions according to their technological capabilities.
