Abstract:
In recent decades, the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes and also people’s tendency toward using diet therapy for these diseases, has led to increase entrepreneurial opportunities in the field of nutrition counseling services in the world, tremendously. Considering the prevalence of diabetes in 6 to 8 percent of the adult population of Iran and the enormous expenses of this disease for the country, it seems necessary to recognize entrepreneurial opportunities in this field in Iran. Therefore, the study on factors influencing the recognition of these opportunities is also important. In the same direction, this survey has been conducted in order to study on the impact of dietitians’ occupational status on their recognition of entrepreneurial opportunities in the field of nutrition counseling for diabetic patients. To implement the study, a questionnaire based on the second stage of Morrison’s four-stage model of opportunity recognition, as a vital stage for this process, was sent by email to 80 professional dietitians in Tehran, capital of Iran. Ultimately, 48 of this random sample responded to the questionnaire. Then, the gathered data were analyzed using Tamhane’s T2 test. Statistical analysis indicated that 25%, 39.6% and 35.4% of participants were business owners, private sector employees and public sector employees, respectively and there were no significant differences between the mean values that obtained from their responses (P>0.05). Thus, it can be concluded that dietitians’ occupational status has no effect on their recognition of entrepreneurial opportunities in the field of nutrition counseling for diabetic patients.
