Abstract: Today’s world is dramatically different from what it was forty or even only twenty years ago. The population and primary energy consumption figures have shot upwards, and global future perspectives are changing, because the world needs more and more natural resources to keep up with its high pace of growth. This article provides an overall picture of what international institutions and the EU are doing to pursue a new economic growth paradigm that is friendly to the earth’s ecosystem and that can at the same time contribute to poverty alleviation.
