Holdings públicas de participações estatais na Itália: o caso IRI

Abstract:
The ltalian system of state control through holding companies is pointed out as an efeetive form of state intervention. Special attention should begiven to the Instituto per la Riconstruzione Industriale - IRI -, one of the most interesting ltalian state holding companies, which justifies the expression "formula-IRI", and qualifies as one of the most famous entrepreneurial states experiences. The aim of the paper is investigate thehistorical conditions in which IRI aroused, with the frail ltalian financing system of the begining of the century. A description of the consolidated model known as ihe "system of state participation" is given, showing thepeculiarities of state intervention through public holdings. The paper concludes with an explanation of the reasons for the crisis in the system in the 70's and its subsequent "reoioal" during the last decade.
