Abstract:
The positive impacts of the adoption of information technologies (IT) on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are not automatic and may not happen immediately. Even firms in countries like Germany, that has an advanced IT infrastructure and several technological support programs involving SMEs, may have problems. This article describes the results of a survey concerning the adoption of IT in SMEs in Germany. The article has an introduction and four sections. The first introduces an analy tical framework to understand IT diffusion policies. The second describes briefly the main IT diffusion policies of Germany. The third describes the results of a survey made among German SMEs. The fourth presents conclusions and policy implications that can be used to discuss the case of Brazilian SMEs.
