Science and technology in agricultural productivity of São Paulo

José Eustáquio Ribeiro Vieira Filho

Revista Brasileira de Economia - RBE, 2025, vol. 78, issue 4

Abstract: Productivity gains are crucial to economic growth. In agriculture, Brazil was able to build an important national innovation system, which resulted in total factor productivity (TFP) growth. How can innovation focused public policies influence productivity growth? Through a time series study, the present study sought to decompose some factors that influenced TFP in the economy of São Paulo. Overall, the main findings showed that training, research, extension, and promotion, together, caused TFP. In the impulse-response function, there was a positive impact on productivity in the main science and technology (S&T) variables. It should be concluded that spending on S&T was important to increase productivity.
