Revista Brasileira de Economia - RBE, 2025, vol. 79, issue 2

Abstract: Between 2020 and 2021, Brazil adopted measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19 disease, such as strict social isolation policies (lockdown), causing the damming of outpatient visits and hospitalizations due to non-COVID-19 related diseases. In this context, the objective of this work is to estimate the impact of the lockdown measure on elective weekly non-COVID-19 related hospitalizations, using data from SIH-SUS of 53 selected municipalities. Based on an event study model, it was observed an average reduction of 8.1% in the number of elective hospitalizations, with differences in results between the types of diseases.
