Abstract: The main question of this paper is, whether the audience in a small country like Austria, which lacks efficient media accountability instruments, is able to bring ethical issues on the agenda by discussing them in blogs, Facebook or on Twitter. How can the audience itself try to keep the media accountable via web tools? Firstly, this issue will be discussed from a theoretical point of view, focusing the audience level. Secondly, I will link the media ethical theoretical approaches with the changes through web 2.0. Thirdly, I will describe the Austrian situation in terms of media accountability. Fourthly, I will present the findings of the expert-interviews, describe the authors’ backgrounds, discuss the motivation and the workflow of the main actors in the field of online media critics and analyze factors of success and problems of their working conditions. One focus will be put on their major problem, the legal situation. Lastly, the analysis will be completed with recent data from the Austrian part of a comparative study on media accountability done in the context FP7-framework research project MediaAcT
