Abstract:
In Romania, the purge, which had started immediately after August, 23rd 1944, overcame, after March 6th, 1945, the usual frameworks of political regime change, intensifying and expanding its field of application under the influence of international pressure, mainly Soviet. In the present study I will address the purge of periodicals, daily or not, in the larger framework of the purge of publications, from the period of the Communist offensive: August 23rd 1944 – December 30th 1947. I will focus both on the legislative and institutional context and especially on the implementation of the purge with all it entails: the implementation of the measures to prohibit publishement, to withdraw from circulation, destroy or block in special library funds, periodicals. I will use archivistic sources to support my working hypothesis: although periodicals were not included in official lists, in practice, the purge was done according to the whim of those ad-hoc committees coordinated by Communist activists and by representatives of the Ministry of Propaganda, being subjected to the purge all publications issued before August 23rd 1944, including periodicals.
