Abstract: The Center for Continuing Education Economics of the Institute for Applied Economic Research, RANEPA, conducts annual monitoring of school education, task is to track current trends and changes in the field of education. As part of the monitoring, a sociological survey of parents of students, teachers and school principals of different types of settlements in Russian regions, differentiated by socio-economic status, is carried out, and open statistical data on the state and development of the general education system are analyzed. In 2020, monitoring was carried out before the World Health Organization declared an outbreak of a new type of coronavirus (COVID-19) a pandemic, which made it possible not only to identify problem areas of the education system, but also to create a basis for comparing the results of activities in normal conditions and in a situation of functioning during forced restrictions. The article was written on the basis of the RANEPA state assignment research program.
