Abstract: This volume presents the papers of participants in an international conference held at the Institute for Economic Problems of the Transition Period on December 2–3, 1995, and devoted to the challenges of transitioning socialist economies to market-based systems. The papers are grouped into three main categories, the discussion of which formed the core of the conference. The classification of a paper under a particular category is to some extent arbitrary, since in their presentations each speaker sought to address both theoretical issues of transformation and the practical achievements and challenges faced by various countries with economies in transition.m.
