Factors Influencing the Adoption of Organic Farming in Lithuania and Poland

Abstract: The European Green Deal, including the Farm to Fork and Biodiversity strategies, assumes an increase in the area under organic farming to 25% by 2030. In order to achieve this goal, it is important to understand the factors that lead to the development of organic farming. Data from Lithuanian and Polish Farm Accountancy Data Network datasets and logistic regression was used to evaluate factors influencing the adoption of organic farming in two neighboring countries—Lithuania and Poland—that have quite different agricultural sectors. The study period was 2009–2019. The results indicated that multiple factors affected the probability of adopting organic farming in both Lithuania and Poland. However, the results were somewhat different at the beginning and at the end of the research period. The findings also demonstrated an important role of subsidies in the adoption of organic farming. These findings are particularly important for policy makers to design effective policies and programs aimed at supporting the development of organic farming in both Lithuania and Poland.
