Evolution of Urban Socio-Spatial Structure in Modern Times in Xi’an, China

Abstract: Urban socio-spatial structure has been extensively studied in the Western context but is less researched in Chinese cities, particularly those in less developed regions. To clarify its evolution and evolutionary mechanisms, the city of Xi’an is considered as an empirical case, using factor ecological analysis for modern times. Research results are concluded as follows: the types and affecting factors of social space continued to increase. Urban socio-spatial structure evolved from single-core pattern to single-core pattern with enclaves, and later showed a more mosaic tendency. The political and socio-economic backgrounds of different periods have had a great influence on the urban socio-spatial structure. The research results have theoretical significance for optimizing socio-spatial structure and understanding the urban space of Xi’an. Compared with studies of other cities in China and cities in western countries, the evolution of urban socio-spatial structure in China shows the characteristics of circle expansion and the gradual and stable transition under socialist ideology.
