Abstract: The present study analyses the processes of construction of the role of the Prime Minister in African states over a long period, particularly since the transitions of the 1990s. The author investigates political contests on several scenes and the different traditions which shaped the institutionalisation of the function of the Prime Minister in the African political space. He also identifies historical backgrounds which led to differences in the role of the Prime Minister in different states. Finally, he outlines perspectives of this political function within African democratic systems.
