Abstract: The article deals with the relationship between history and human rights thinking in twentieth century China. An intercultural historical approach is applied for understanding the different historical layers and implications of the human rights idea in China. The article distinguishes between different phases to reconstruct the complicated history of the human rights idea in China which oscillated between acceptance and denial. In conclusion, it is argued that the human rights idea in China proved to be a powerful, influential and highly contested issue that was time and again brought to the fore by government brutality and state violence.
