Abstract: The agenda of the National People’s Congress’ annual session in March 2006 bears witness to a revival of ideology, which had long been regarded obsolete in China’s pragmatic reform course. The party leadership’s maneuvering space has become increasingly constrained by a conflict between proponents of liberal market reforms and a conservative “new left“. Recent debates surrounding the policy of the “new socialist countryside“ and the legal protection of private property are analyzed to illustrate the re-ideologization of party politics.
