Abstract: India and China have intensified their bilateral relations since the 1990s significantly. The rapprochement was fostered by a new convergence of interests for instance in the field of security, economic and global issues. Bilateral problems like the unresolved border question could be managed with the help of institutional arrangements like the creation of a joint working group. But the convergence of interests should not be equated with a global leadership role of both countries as it is conceptuali sed in the notions of 'Chinindia or 'Chindia Both countries understood themselves as great powers in a multi-polar world. This implies strategies of soft-balancing and engagement. Therefore, future cooperation will be shaped by growing interdependence on the one hand and hidden rivalries including strategies to slow down the rise of the neighbour on the other hand.
