Elections in Taipei and Kaohsiung: A Vote for the Center

Abstract: When in December 2006 new mayors and city councillors were elected in Taipei and Kaohsiung, everyone expected the electorate to deal a blow to the DPP in retaliation for the corruption scandals that have surrounded the president since October 2005. But amazingly almost nothing of the sort happened. Instead, the small parties holding extreme positions suffered greatly. Especially the PFP that had tried hard to topple the president, was held responsible for deepening the divide that has been marring politics in Taiwan for years. Center-oriented political forces of the big parties were strengthened. They appear to be the main winners of the elections.
