The New Faces after the 17th Party Congress of the Chinese Communist Party

Abstract:
The first plenary session of the 17th Central Committee (CC) of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on 22 October 2007 elected the members of the Politburo and its Standing Committee, the members of the Secretariat and of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the CCP, and confirmed the secretaries of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) which had been elected at the first plenary session of the CCDI on the same day. The Politburo now consists of 25 members, 12 of which are new members. The Standing Committee, which continues to consist of nine members, saw four new faces: Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, and Zhou Yongkang. This article introduces the new leaders of the Politburo, the Secretariat, the CCDI and the CMC with short biographies.
