 The Fourth National Assembly Elections in Cambodia: Free and Fair, but Far away from International StandardsMaraile Goergen Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs, 2008, vol. 27, issue 3, 99-114 Abstract: On July 27, 2008, Cambodia’s fourth National Assembly elections took place. Approximately six million Cambodians cast their votes for one of the 11 running parties. Unsurprisingly, Prime Minister Hun Sen, who had already governed for 23 years, was confirmed in his position. His Cambodian People’s Party won 90 National Assembly seats, which was more than ever before. Evidently, Hun Sen could extend his power over the small kingdom. In addition, the old and new coalition partner Front Uni National pour un Cambodge Ind?pendant, Neutre, Pacifique, et Coop?ratif lost many votes and will only hold two seats in the next mandate. The liberal Sam Rainsy Party gained two more National Assembly seats than in the previous mandate and is the last remaining serious opposition party. Despite incidents that influenced the election campaigning and election day itself, observers called the elections “free and fair, but far away from international standards”.
