Abstract: This paper intends to contribute to further discussion about the various forms of citizens’ involvement in the health system and to a clarification of the various forms of interaction between health systems and citizens, in particular, participation, consultation and communication. It also features a brief historical review of the strategies of users' involvement in health, the virtues and the challenges identified by scholars of this sector. Finally, it presents the state of the art of citizen's health participation in Portugal and some final considerations.
