Too many cooks: Integrating the recipes for post-conflict development

Abstract: A key challenge for those for those responding to the main criticisms of postconflict development is merely obtaining a sufficient understanding of the relationships between the complex array of actors and factors involved. Calls for greater coordination and coherence have emerged but it is still unclear whether these go far enough in providing a practically effective solution. This article examines the recent developments in postconflict development. It discusses the adequacy of these developments in respect of substantive and procedural concerns as well as the extent to which the situation on the ground is improved. It is argued that while these developments have made significant and much needed progress, they do not go far enough in order to effect meaningful change on the ground. A more encompassing and more deeply integrated approach is required to ensure that the multiple actors and factors can work together to produce a sustainable solution.
