Redistribution and military coups

Abstract: This paper explores the link between redistribution and coups, typically overlooked in the coup literature dealing with incomes, growth and, recently, inequality. The model features three agents — government, opposition, and the military — and maximizes their utilities under two possible scenarios: peace and coup. Using real data from Honduras, the welfare losses associated with a breach of the country’s social contract are estimated to exceed 11 percent of gross domestic product for the opposition to conspire to stage a coup.
