Abstract:
The average completion age of Danish students is very high compared to other countries in the OECD area. The Danish students take on average seven years to complete a higher level education instead of the five years prescribed. The consequence of long completion times is a waste of educated resources and Denmark could lose ground as a country of educational advantaged. Instead of creating productivity and paying taxes the students tend to stay at the universities. This paper tries to investigate the relationship between completion times and background characteristics for students matriculated at the economy program at the University of Copenhagen in the period 1996-2000. A huge data amount from the university system is merged with detailed register data from Statistics Denmark which makes it possible to set up binary response models to estimate the probability of an early graduating.
