Abstract:
This paper analyses attitudes towards immigration in the EU-15 - including the immigration following the recent enlargements of the EU - using data from the two rounds of the Europeans Social Survey. We explore how socioeconomic factors and perceived consequences of immigration can explain these attitudes, and analyse to which extent Danes deviate from EU avergae. While attitudes appear to be driven by the same factors in Denmark and the rest of the EU-15, Danes are relatively more optimistic about the economic consequences of immigration - especially those relating to the labour market - although they are sligthly mores pessimistic about the fiscal consequences of immigration therefor results in a considerable unexplained difference between the average Danish attitude and the average EU-15 attitude towards immigration.
