Abstract: The article analyse leads and drawbacks of the Danish private sector Research and Development vis-à-vis Finland, Sweden and Norway. The aim is to identify whether sectors or specific firm clusters have invested less in R&D than comparable countries using data on actual R&D investments in 2001. The main results are that the Danish private sector R&D activities are smaller than the Finnish and particularly Swedish R&D activities but larger than the Norwegian activities. The Finnish lead disappears when the Finnish ICT sector is removed. The Danish low performances lie in the ICT production and trade sector as well as among very large firms while the Danish leads lie in the medico and knowledge service sectors as well as among SME firms.
