Abstract:
The paper gives an overview of the development of the education of apprentices in Denmark since 1931. The development during the late 1990ies was very favourable, as about 45 per cent of a youth cohort began an education as apprentices. It is the highest registered share over a longer time span. As a consequence of the slump, the share dropped from 46 to 41 per cent from 2001 to 2002. The drop on 5 percentage points corresponds to about 3000 young persons, who cannot obtain the education at the employer that they wish. Quantitative analyses are carried out in order to trace the factors that influence the inflow of apprentices. An evaluation is conducted of the different proposals to alleviate the lack of training slots for apprentices.
