Abstract: Due to the failure of immigrants from less developed countries (LDCs) to integrate into Danish society, and due to the increasing number of second-generation immigrants from these countries living in Denmark, the focus of policy needs to switch from simple integration to integration across generations. In studying the second generation of immigrants from LDCs, we find a striking difference in their educational distribution compared with that of ethnic Danes. After correcting for the difference in age distribution across the two groups studied, we find that the main determinants of the educational distribution are in the intergenerational transmission process. The parents of second-generation immigrants have less human capital, and the immigrants show intergenerational mobility which is as low as that of ethnic Danes. The total effect is slow integration across generations, and consequently we expect only slow convergence in the educational distributions.
