Abstract:
We examine how the life style of individuals can influence public expenditures on health and social services for people aged 62-77 in Denmark. Functional ability is found to be the most important correlate. Sickness, living alone, physical activity and social networks are also found to be related to levels of expenditure, whereas gender, psychological resources and socioeconomic status have no direct influence. Our results indicate that if the observed improvements were to continue in the functional abilities of the elderly and in the proportion of the age group who live alone, then the in - crease in expenditures for the age group studied would be 25-35% by 2020, compared to a predicted figure of 40% based solely on the number of older people in the population.
