Abstract:
This paper presents empirical evidence on returns on human capital varia bles in Denmark based on the most extensive panel of data so far. The main goals are to investigate gender-specific returns on both education and labour market experience, examine the time trends in the data, and to test the robustness of our estimates under different specifications of the model. In short, we find that male (average marginal) returns on schooling are 5-6 percent per year of education. This is approximately 2 percentage points more than the equivalent female returns. This gender gap has been almost constant throughout the years examined. Thus, both male returns and female returns have been characterized by a parallel upward trend. The returns on education are relatively low in Denmark compared to what is found in other European countries, but in line with returns in Norway and Sweden.
