Abstract:
We have carried out an empirically based comparison between two different types of pension reform: on the one hand, a reduction in the level of early retirement benefit combined with an increase in the number of hours which people receiving such benefit are allowed to work; and on the other hand, an increase in the age of eligibility for early retirement benefit. The data used include information on patterns of re tirement behaviour for a sample of married couples. We calculate how the time of leaving the labour market depends on salary, level of early retirement benefit, health and other fac - tors relating to both the person in question and the person’s spouse. Comparisons are made of the estimated consequences for the availability of labour on the basis of type of reform, employment sector, gender, and labour market conditions.
