Mill's Transformational View of Human Nature

Laura Mattos

History of Economic Ideas, 2005, vol. 13, issue 3, 33-55

Abstract: This paper presents a fairly comprehensive account of John Stuart Mill’s conception of human nature. Special emphasis is given to his views on the possibility of transforming mankind. Some features of his view on Psychology and on the role played by institutions in moulding the character of the individuals are discussed, as well as some aspects of his ideal of man. These elements are important to the understanding of Mill’s ‘economic man’, the abstraction upon which he defines the object of political economy, and of his proposals of institutional reform.
