Abstract:
The newsletter focuses on differences in university faculty’ positions and salaries by age groups and accumulated work experience as well as labour market outcomes of young faculty. We compare characteristics of employment of experienced and young university faculty between leading universities-participants of «5-100 Russian Academic Excellence project» and other universities. The study is based on administrative data of Ministry of Education and Science of Russia for 2019 and the survey of university faculty carried out within the Monitoring of educational markets and organization project in 2015-2017. We found that Russian academia faces considerable aging problem: more than half of university faculty are over 50, and the share young faculty under 35 is less than 15% and under 30 – less than 6%. There is an extremely late peak in earnings – the highest salaries are earned by faculty over 60. Salaries of young faculty are significantly lower. Very low career mobility, low salary growth and almost direct link between work experience and salaries are identified as common features of academic labour market in Russia. Leading universities differ and bring more opportunities for young faculty, salaries in leading universities depend to higher extent on research productivity and do not rely on experience only. As a result, leading universities may attract talented young faculty, while employment in ordinary universities is not attractive option for young scientists.
