Job-education mismatches among university graduates

Abstract: The newsletter is devoted to the problem of job-education mismatches among university graduates. We evaluate the share of graduates who work in a job, which is related to their university field of study by groups of specializations, industries and regions of Russia. We explore the status of economic activity of university graduates by their field of study and region of employment. The newsletter also focuses on the impact of job-education mismatches on graduate salaries and job satisfaction. The study is based on VTR Rosstat data and Russian Labour Force Survey for 2016 and 2018. We found that one-third of Russian university graduates are mismatched in terms of education and job. Pessimistic perspectives for graduate employability are observed in Southern and North-Caucauses Federal Districts. Graduates of medical fields of study have the highest probability of work according to their university specialization and graduates in agriculture and social sciences are relatively more likely to be mismatched. Graduates, who experience job-education match have higher salaries and are more satisfied with their job compared to mismatched graduates.
