Unemployment among tertiary education graduates: determinants, duration and patterns of job search

Abstract: The newsletter is devoted to the problem of unemployment among university and VET graduates, who received a degree in 2017-2019. We analyze graduate unemployment by level of education, region and university specialization. The study is based on the data of Russian Labour force survey for 2019.- We found that unemployment rate among tertiary educated graduates is 14.4%. University graduates, especially with Master or Specialist degrees have significantly higher chances to be employed, while VET graduates face high unemployment risks.- For 70% of tertiary education graduates unemployment is temporary and average length of unemployment is less than 6 months.- Graduates find jobs mainly through friend and relative’s networks and internet, state employment service as a channel for job search was mentioned by 12% of graduates.- Highest level of unemployment among tertiary education graduates is observed in Southern and North-Caucauses Federal Districts.
