Abstract: In this paper we discuss Russian high school graduates’ educational trajectories and demand for higher education. The most popular areas of study and regions for getting higher education among students are also considered. The research is based on survey data on high school graduates conducted by HSE University in 2020. The demand for higher education among Russian young people remains very high: 85% of students want to go to university. The value of higher education is high regardless of the family’s income, the region of residence, gender, and parental education level. The most popular areas of study are natural sciences (16%), economics and management (16%), engineering, technology, and technical sciences (15%). Students from different regions of the country mostly prefer various majors. The structure of demand confirms the presence of "female" and "male" jobs. The majority of school graduates (67%) plan to get government-supported university places. More than half (55%) of respondents from wealthy families are also ready to pay for higher education, and only 10% of students from poorer families are going to consider this option. More than half (56%) of school graduates is going to get higher education in their region. This distribution also remains in the sample excluding residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
